From the moment I stepped on board the Avalon Imagery II, I felt cocooned in elegance, comfort, and festive cheer. It’s a “suite ship,” which means more space, more light, and more little luxuries than a typical river vessel.

I was staying in a Panorama Suite on the Royal Deck — a choice that made my heart sing. With its wall-to-wall, floor-to-ceiling panoramic windows, the cabin felt like a private observatory, transforming into a kind of “open-air balcony” as the glass wall slid open. 

The suite was about 200 sq ft, which is significantly more generous than many standard river-cruise cabins.I could stretch out on the Comfort Collection bed, facing the sweeping view of the Rhine and Main Rivers.

Little Luxuries That Made It Feel Like Christmas

One of the most delightful touches: on arrival, I found a Christmas bauble gift waiting for me in the cabin. It was such a sweet, personal welcome — a keepsake I tucked into my luggage, and a little reminder of the season’s warmth.

Each evening, as part of the turn-down service, the cabin steward would put my shoes neatly by the bed’s edge. In the mornings, they’d be perfectly placed again, like a quiet gesture of care.

And the storage was brilliant: large triple-door wardrobes, under-bed storage, and plenty of space to unpack fully. There was also a safe, a mini-bar, and L’Occitane toiletries in the bathroom.

Living on Deck: Spaces to Relax, Connect & Celebrate

Beyond the suite, the ship offered so many cozy and elegant spaces:

• The Panorama Lounge: where I spent afternoons watching the river glide by, warming my hands around a cup of hot chocolate.
  
• The Club Lounge: open 24/7, stocked with self-serve tea, coffee, soft drinks, and treats.
  
• The Sky Deck: despite the brisk December air, I bundled up and stole a few moments outside on the open deck. The views under winter light were absolutely serene.
  

Fitness-conscious? There was a small fitness centre, though I confess my favourite “workout” was walking to the rail, leaning out gently to feel the crisp river air.

Food, Drink & Festive Cheer

Food was one of the greatest joys onboard. The dining experience felt intimate and seasonal — hearty, warming dishes that felt just right for Christmas. Think traditional comfort fare with refined touches. (Avalon’s menus during Christmastime cruises often mirror a festive holiday feel.) 

Each evening, there was a cocktail hour — a lovely chance to mingle with fellow travellers, sip on festive cocktails (mulled wine was a favourite), and soak up the glow of twinkling lights in the lounge.

On one of the deck nights, they brought the holiday spirit alive with and live entertainment — the soft voices harmonised just so, echoing under the low winter sky as the ship floated gently.

Thoughtful Details That Made It Feel Like Home

What really made this cruise feel like more than a trip was the care and attention to detail:

• The turn-down service was more than just functional — it was warm and personal.
  
• The refreshing scent of L’Occitane toiletries made every morning feel like a little indulgence.
  
• Towels and robes were plush, and slippers were provided — perfect for padding around in quiet moments.
  
• Complimentary Starlink Wi-Fi kept me connected, but I found myself using it less than I thought — there was something freeing about being offline, present.

In my Second Era, travel isn’t just about ticking places off a list — it’s about nourishing the soul. This Christmas cruise felt less like a holiday and more like a gift I was giving to myself.

Cruising through Germany’s rivers, floating past twinkling towns, and spending warm nights aboard a beautiful ship reminded me that rest, beauty, and connection are not luxuries — they are powerful tools for renewal.
